Stephen Colbert spoke out about the proliferation of memes surrounding Vice President Kamala Harris since she was named the Democratic presidential nominee, who also proudly embraced the “brat” label and entertained the crowd by reprising her Charli XCX “Apple” dance.
In a monologue on Wednesday night, Night Screening The host was referring to Harris’ much-memed “Falling Out of the Coconut Tree” speech in 2023, in which she quickly switched from laughing and delivering light-hearted metaphors to an existential statement about human existence.
“This sudden change in tone could herald a very interesting presidential announcement,” Colbert joked. “‘I didn’t just slip on a banana peel and fall into a kiddie pool full of pudding! I’m ordering airstrikes on Syria this afternoon.'”
Colbert also weighed in on CNN’s awkward “Kamala Is Sassy” segment, in which five adults over the age of 32 tried to make sense of the Harris presidential campaign’s use of memes. Unfortunately, as Colbert pointed out, you can’t literally just “print out a meme and put on some reading glasses” to create the impression that you’re up to date on the latest trends.
