The Force works in mysterious ways that we don’t always understand, or even need to understand. Star Wars Materials are used in ways never before seen. Star Wars History from both the current continuity and Expanded Universe content over the years. Acolyte While it borrowed a lot of ideas, characters and material from the latter, the season finale climaxed with a final twist that connected it to one of the old EU’s most beloved stories… and has other intriguing connections. Star Wars history.
At the climax of “Acolyte,” AcolyteTwin sisters Osha and Mei, and a dark side individual known as the Stranger, are fleeing from a rapidly closing in group of Jedi. Choosing to offer herself as a distraction to buy her sister and the Stranger time to escape, Mei is reprimanded and left to be held in Jedi custody. However, before she is captured, in a tearful farewell, the Stranger offers to use the Force to wipe all memories of Osha and himself from Mei’s mind, preventing them from being used by the Jedi to find her. However, it is clear to Mei, and the audience, that it is not just her selective memories of Osha and the Stranger that she has lost; all Memories of her life from age eight onwards, specifically the night her coven of witches was burned and killed during an encounter with four Jedi.
Such large-scale memory erasure has rarely been seen in living organisms. Star Wars (More on the “biological” aspect of this later.) But using the Force to erase someone’s memories does have precedent in the series, both in the current series and as a connection to one of the series’ most iconic storylines. Star Wars Expanded Universe canon, Knights of the Old Republic.
The most famous memory wipes Star Wars history
The concept of a specific Force technique, sometimes called memory wipes or “memory rubs”, was originally Star WarsAfter all, aren’t Jedi mind tricks just about temporarily altering a subject’s memories to implant certain beliefs? But there are instances of long-term, but short-term, memory wipes throughout the EU, such as Luke using the Force to wipe the memories of several Stormtroopers (which he states lasted for years). Princess Leia’s Courtshipor Jacen Solo learning techniques from Falanasi Legacy of the Force novel.
But perhaps the most famous memory wipe is Star Warsremains part of an epic twist on the beloved Bioware CRPG. Knights of the Old RepublicAs the game’s events unfold, the player character embarks on a journey to locate a powerful weapons factory known as the Starforge, once controlled by Darth Revan, a rebel Sith Lord who disappeared during a battle against the Jedi and the Republic, only to discover that they are in fact Revan himself. Before the start of the game, Revan is found to have been severely injured in a surprise attack by a team of Jedi aboard his flagship. However, Revan is rescued by the sole survivor of the attack, a Jedi named Bastila Shan, who brings him back to the Jedi Council on Dantooine.
The Council decided to cure Revan, but in the process, altered his memories to erase his memories of his former lives as a Jedi and Sith, and give him false memories of being a soldier in the Republic military. Using Bastila’s Force-link with Revan when she saved his life during the attack on Revan’s ship, the Council hoped to slowly restore Revan’s memories and lead the Republic to his former base of operations, which they then used to defeat Revan’s false apprentice, Darth Malak.
Current Memory Wipe Star Wars Canon
in front Acolytememory wipes are relatively rare, as in previous continuities, save for certain instances spanning both the Old EU and the rebooted EU. Star Wars Canon. Clone Wars In the third season trilogy episodes “Overlord”, “Altar of Mortis” and “Phantom of Mortis”, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano encountered three ancient beings who claimed to embody different aspects of the Force: the Daughter who represented the light, the Brother who represented the dark, and the Father who represented the balance of the two aspects. As events unfolded on the planet Mortis, the Brother showed Anakin his future destiny as Darth Vader in an attempt to win him over to his side, but the memory was wiped from his mind by the Father for violating the laws of time.
Of course, we have much more evidence for other kinds of memory erasure. Star Wars: A technological process of erasing a droid’s memory banks. Most famously, C-3PO witnessed this after “Star Wars.” Revenge of the SithBail Organa has his memory wiped to prevent the secret of Anakin’s fall to the dark side from coming to light, but the others Star Wars The source material establishes that periodic memory wiping of droids is common throughout the galaxy, whether for resale or to maintain operational security in times of war (which is Clone Wars One could speculate that Anakin’s refusal to wipe R2-D2’s memory could have put classified information into enemy hands, or he could simply be doing so as part of routine maintenance. Star Wars This process has a much longer history with non-organic lifeforms than with organic ones. The idea of droid sentience speaks to its troubled history. Changing a human mind is a horrible violation, and changing a droid’s mind is no surprise. But… teeth Still, it’s an interesting similarity.
how AcolyteMemory wipe work?
Interestingly, of the two main depictions of Force-induced memory wipes, Star Wars—Revan’s Restoration Knights of the Old Republicand Anakin’s wipe-in Clone Wars—AcolyteThis example seems closer to the latter than the former. Knights of the Old RepublicRevan’s memories were not completely wiped, but largely replaced with those of his new identity; the process occurred while he was in a coma after the attack on his flagship. Revan was not consciously involved in the process, but rather involved the combined efforts of the Jedi Council working together over an extended period of time. Despite the process being extremely thorough and complex, Revan experienced resurfacing visions of his past before the truth of their identities were re-revealed to him by Malak.
Clone Wars‘ and Acolyte‘s version is instead quicker and more forthright: the Father is a powerful being unlike any other Force user has encountered. Star WarsMeanwhile, the Stranger is a powerful fallen Jedi, but nowhere near Father in terms of the scope of his abilities. Still, both perform memory wipes relatively quickly; Father touches Anakin’s forehead and he instantly loses consciousness. Meanwhile, while the Stranger performs the wipe, May still partially recalls her sister’s memories, but it still only lasts a few seconds. Both are akin to erasing an entire block of time from existence, but Revan’s wipe included replacing real memories with false ones as well.
Anakin and May’s memory wipes also involve a level of consent that wasn’t present with Revan: May willingly offers to have her memories wiped by the Stranger, and while Anakin doesn’t explicitly consent to his father’s memory wipe, he at least expresses a desire to forget what he learned before his father acted on it. Anytime the Force is used telepathically on another person, there’s an element of participation involved, and how strong-willed the target’s mind is, so it makes sense that there’s that element at play here as well, making the process easier or harder depending on whether the target resists.
