
During research StarboundMy new book about the reality of the interstellar trip, I was often surprised at the strange and excessive spacecraft design proposed in a respected scientist. The most famous of these is the Project Orion (1957-1965), and the central idea explodes the series of thermo-nucleus bombs behind it and gives a series of powerful kicks through the universe. That was to promote the interstellar spaceship.
A long time after the end of the project, Freeman Dyson, who worked on the project, said, “We were a little crazy, thinking that all of them would work.”
