Since the announcement, Crooked Man “Budget cutsIt was expected to be a more “Hellboy” film than its predecessors from Guillermo del Toro and Neil Marshall, and it seems to live up to those expectations: Because the story is set in the 1950s, Kesey’s Hellboy is younger and awkward than either Perlman or Harbour’s, but the contrast is immediately striking.
In the film, Hellboy teams up with rookie BPRD (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense) agent Bobbi Jo Song (Adeline Rudolph) to investigate a soul-harvesting demon in the Appalachian Mountains. Naturally, this low-stakes story lends itself well to the “actor roams the woods” approach to low-budget filmmaking, but it’s rare to see a character in such heavy makeup in charge of all the action.
