Most people believe that they receive online advertisements as a result of their devices secretly eavesdropping on their offline conversations, even though there is no evidence that such a thing is happening.
Joanna Strycharz of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and her colleagues surveyed 886 people in the United States, Netherlands, and Poland to find out their opinions about online advertising. The team selected these countries because they believe that U.S. privacy laws are generally considered weaker than European privacy laws and that these countries represent a range of potential views on surveillance.
