In 2017, Amazon acquired the television rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and agreed to adapt it into a series. In 2022, season 1 of The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power was finally released to great acclaim, but also mixed reactions as many thought it took too long to set up the action. The appeal of this series is that it is set many generations before any of the previous Lord of the Rings stories, including The Hobbit and the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. The series is based on the history of Middle-earth, which was created by Tolkien and written mainly as a backstory to the original books.
The title “The Rings of Power”, which became so important and essential to the original books and the movies based on it, has a backstory in the series and Prime Video will show how it was made. Sauron, the main antagonist of the books and movies that people love, has always been in power and was a villain until the Rings of Power came along, but it will be revealed how he came to power. The Rings of Power has a lot more to offer that will provide a backstory to the famous trilogy of books. A lot was shown in season 1 and with 8 epic episodes, it set the stage for the upcoming seasons. Here we explain what happened in season 1 and what the ending of season 2 means when it premieres on August 29, 2024.

Spoiler alert – we’ll go into more detail on the plot of The Lord of the Rings: The Power of the Ring season 1 here.
The Lord of the Rings: The Power of the Ring Season 1 Synopsis
Many plot twists are introduced in the early episodes
Amazon
Season 1 of The Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power begins in the Second Age of Middle-earth, a time of peace and follows events happening in the various kingdoms of Middle-earth. The season introduces many characters, many new and some familiar, even though this is thousands of years before the appearance of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins. The main characters in The Ring of Power are two of the most famous elves in Tolkien’s lexicon: Galadriel and Elrond.
Though the world is currently at peace, all of the characters are dealing with the looming threat of the Dark Lord Sauron. There are four main storylines spread across the map, all of which converge or come close at some point.
- Galadriel has led the effort to track down Sauron and put an end to his claim to the Southlands, and equipment bearing his mark has been found across the map. She leads a band of men from Númenor into the Southlands to fight, and meets a traveller named Halbrand, whom she believes to be the rightful heir to the throne of the Southlands.
- Elrond is tasked with building a new forge and enlists the help of the Dwarves to do so, realizing that the new metal the Elves are mining could help restore the Elven strength that is fading.
- Another elf, Arondir, is in the Southlands dealing with the growing orc population. He and a human healer, Bronwyn, work together to save the people of the land from this threat. Meanwhile, Bronwyn’s son, Theo, finds a powerful, broken sword bearing the Mark of Sauron.
- In another area, a group of Har-Foot people encounter a “stranger” who does not speak their language but who appears to possess mystical powers since being discovered in a meteorite crater.
Season 1 takes place against the backdrop of the beautiful landscapes and vast vistas that audiences have come to know and love from Peter Jackson’s six-part The Lord of the Rings film series. With fight scenes, amazing music, expansive set designs, and many characters with special names, we highly recommend watching the show with subtitles turned on.

What does the season 1 finale mean for season 2?
More rings need to be created
Prime Video
As you might expect, many characters and storylines intersect in the last few episodes, with the finale revealing who the biggest villain of all time was. Galadriel has been searching for Sauron all season, but it turns out that Halbrand was Sauron in disguise all along. Galadriel only realizes this after taking him to be cured with Elven magic. Halbrand convinces Celebrimbor to use the mined new metal to create a small token, or ring, to help the Elves. Of course, this is all part of Sauron’s master plan to build something that will help him rule all of Middle-earth.
When Galadriel realizes this, she confronts him and he tries to convince her to make him the Dark Queen. As we all know, Galadriel is known in later lore as the “Queen of Light” and she angrily refuses. Halbrand, aka Sauron, then flees to Mordor, a land in the south that is now infested with orcs. It turns out that the “stranger” who is with the Proudfoot clan is not actually a villain but an Istari, or wizard (FYI, Gandalf and Saruman from the original books are also Istari). He sets off with the Proudfoot clan to Lune to find the constellation he has been searching for all season.
The season ends with Elrond finding records of the new forges being used and Galadriel convincing Celebrimbor to create the first three Rings of Power, meaning there will be more Rings to be made in future seasons. The finale depicts Sauron’s quest to take the Southlands from Adder, who now oversees all of the Orcs, Galadriel’s endless quest to stop him, the anger of the people of Númenor, and the quest of the “Stranger” to find his constellation.
Tolkien’s map of Middle-earth is still only partially drawn, so there has been a lot of discussion about which locations will be featured in Season 2. The latest season of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is set to premiere on Prime Video at the end of August.
