Horse welfare at the 2024 Paris Olympics has been largely deemed good, but many animal lovers are troubled by shocking footage that emerged just days before the opening ceremony of British Olympic gold medallist Charlotte Dujardin abusing a horse during training. Dujardin was due to compete this summer in dressage, an event in which horses perform graceful steps and dance-like movements, often set to music. But the footage showed Dujardin violently striking an obviously distressed horse more than 20 times a minute, sparking a public outcry.
