As the season draws to a close, TikTok has unveiled its Songs of the Summer, releasing a list of the platform’s most popular tracks that illuminated the longest days of the year.
“Very Modest” shows TikTok’s ability to shape modern language
The most popular song on TikTok in the US this summer is “MILLION DOLLAR BABY (VHS)” by Tommy Richman. The song has been used as background music in a staggering 7.5 million videos. The song’s impact goes beyond its viral “I ain’t never rep a set, baby…” line, as it also appeared on Spotify’s global summer solstice list. Following Richman’s song are the ever-meme-able “Nasty” by Tinashe and Blood Orange’s 2011 track “Champagne Coast.” Ian’s “Magic Johnson” and Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather” round out the top five.

It may be surprising that the Sabrina Carpenter song that made the list is not “Espresso,” but rather the follow-up single, “Please, Please, Please.” Gloryhole and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Wanna Be” and Kendrick Lamar’s anti-Drake track, “Not Like Us,” also made the top 10.
Globally, Floy Menor and Chris MJ’s “Gata Only” topped the list. Though her cultural impact this summer is undeniable, no Charli XCX songs made it onto either list. The absence of “Espresso” and Bratone can’t help but wonder what the creators were thinking when choosing the song to serve as background music for a summer highlight.
