Donald Trump’s media company, Trump Media & Technology Group, announced plans on Friday to launch a new video streaming service called Truth Social. It’s unclear what content will be featured, how much it will cost, or when the service will launch, but one thing is certain: your most obnoxious Trump-supporting uncle is going to love it.
The Orwellian streaming service is called Truth+, and will be “rolled out in stages,” according to a press release posted online. The release mentions “beta testing,” but doesn’t offer a specific timeline for when it will be available to users. However, once testing is over, it appears the primary way to watch Truth+ content will be the Truth Social website, as well as apps for Android and iOS.
“By clicking the icon, users will be able to access streaming content as a standalone channel or in a separate picture-in-picture (‘PiP’) window while scrolling through the Truth Social platform,” the company said in a release. “iOS users will need to update their Truth Social app to access streaming. Android or web users will not need to update or download.”
The release also explains that the initial content will include news, commentary, weather, lifestyle and entertainment content, but doesn’t explain how it will be delivered. Will it be a show with a D-list celebrity like Kevin Sorbo telling you that wokeism is the reason your adult child no longer speaks to you? Or a teenage host blurting out that homework is a communist plot to destroy America? The show could go in a variety of directions.
According to a press release, the next phase of Truth+’s rollout will include “Christian and family-friendly content,” but that could mean a variety of things given all the blasphemous garbage Trump spews — after all, the guy sells public domain Bibles for $60.
Devin Nunes, the former California congressman who now heads Trump’s media company, is pitching Truth+ as a home for free speech and “great TV content,” which may reveal just how out of touch he is with internet culture. To be clear, there’s no indication that Truth+ will include “TV content,” but rather videos produced exclusively for the web.
“We founded Truth Social first to protect free speech on the internet,” Nunes said in the release. “Now we’re establishing a trusted home for great TV content that’s been ignored or at risk of cancellation by larger companies. We’re also securing our own unique tech stack and hardware infrastructure to make our new CDN uncancellable. We look forward to launching many enhancements and adding great new content to our platform in the near future.”
But that’s not all: Phase 3 is even more ambitious, according to the press release.
“The next phase will see the introduction of a streaming app integrated with the Truth Social platform, offering enhanced features such as an interactive 14-day e-guide, instant catch-up TV of shows aired in the last seven days, network DVR and video on demand,” the release stated.
Oddly, although this news release was published early on Friday morning, Trump himself has yet to make any mention of Truth+ on his Truth Social account, which is understandable given the fact that he has been so preoccupied with spreading racist drivel and various conspiracy theories about Kamala Harris.
Judging by the polls, the race is very close, and Harris is on a roll since taking over from Biden as the Democratic nominee less than two weeks ago. The FiveThirtyEight national polling average currently has Harris leading with 45%, Trump with 43.6%, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with 5.6%. But the election is not decided by the popular vote. Harris is leading in many battleground states, according to the latest polls, but she needs to maintain that momentum for the next three months. Obviously, that’s what every decent American is praying for.
