The movie’s impressive performance, a sequel to the 1996 disaster blockbuster Twister, could be due to audiences really taking to it: At the time of its release, the film had an audience score of 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The unexpected success of “Twisters,” which was expected to gross $55 million during its opening weekend, was likely buoyed in part by the appeal of rising stars Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, who packed into an impressive press tour to promote the film, including going head-to-head in a Hot Ones matchup.
Twisters’ $80.5 million opening weekend was the third highest opening weekend of the year behind Inside Out 2 ($154 million) and Dune Part 2 ($82 million).
