June 2022 seems like a long time ago, but The Umbrella Academy Fans binge-watched season 3 and then moved on to other pop culture shows. The show is a lot of fun and season 3 was awesome, but it’s been over two years since the Netflix series released new episodes. Are you ready to dive into season 4 and the final season?
We’ve already seen the “What Happens So Far” montage that kicks off Season 4, and frankly, it didn’t reveal all that much. So, here’s a quick rundown of what you need to remember as you get started on Season 4. Season 4 will only have six episodes and will premiere on August 8th on Netflix.
What happened in season 3 The Umbrella Academy?

when The Umbrella AcademyThe show — loosely based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá’s Dark Horse Comics series about the super-powered but dysfunctional adopted Hargreeves family — is kicking off its third season after the main characters averted the apocalypse at the end of season two (they did the same in season one). Season two featured a lot of time travel, and while the characters finished in 2019, in the alternate reality of The Umbrella Academy (here called “Sparrow Academy”), most of its members had changed. One member was the still-living version of their deceased brother, Ben (Justin H. Min).
Enmities quickly ensue, with the Umbrella kids taking refuge in the quirky Hotel Obsidian. There’s fighting between factions (and between siblings), but also occasional bursts of teamwork and even a romance between Umbrella Luthor (Tom Hopper) and Sparrow Thrawn (Genesis Rodriguez). Throughout the season, characters grapple with the effects of time travel on both a personal level (problematically, all of the Umbrella kids’ mothers died before they were born in this particular timeline) and a “universe is going crazy because of all the anomalies” due to the powerful Kugelblitz.
especially, The Umbrella Academy Season 3 featured lead actor Elliot Page coming out as a transgender man, seamlessly handled within the storyline as his character Victor followed the same path. Season 3 also saw Klaus (Robert Sheehan) die and come back to life multiple times, Five (Aidan Gallagher) meet his older self, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) nearly succumb to the grief of losing her daughter in Season 2’s time-travel storyline, and Lila (Ritu Arya) and Diego (David Castañeda) almost find a way to co-parent.
Throughout the season, it seems increasingly likely that Umbrella/Sparrow patriarch Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) is up to more evil than usual. He’s actually an extraterrestrial of unknown age from another dimension. It all ties into the Hotel Obsidian, the setting for Luthor and Sloane’s wedding and the meeting point for all the surviving characters as the Kugelblitz begins to destroy reality around them.
What happened in the end? The Umbrella Academy Season 3?

Reginald reveals that Hotel Obsidian is actually a machine in another dimension, built by whoever created the universe and is rigging a portal to reset said universe. On the other side is a mirror image hotel called Hotel Oblivion. The Hargreeves must work together to solve the machine’s complex puzzles, which is (as always) a Herculean task. But finally, Allison is able to kill Reginald, who is sucking psychic life force from the “kids” to power the machine, and initiate the reset process.
At the end of Season 3, we learn that Allison’s daughter and her husband, from Season 2, are alive. Reginald and his long-dead wife Abigail are also alive. These two are important characters in this new timeline. While other characters are nursed back to health (Five, who lost an arm along the way, does recover), Luther is distraught to discover that his new wife Sloane is gone. Also, everyone has lost their superpowers. Most characters are in total panic and running in different directions. In the mid-credits scene, we see Ben, the only surviving Sparrow, on a train in Korea, presumably the same train he was born on in a flashback at the beginning of Season 3.
What is Season 4? The Umbrella Academy What is it about?

Here’s the announcement from Netflix: “The Hargreeves brothers are scattered after a climactic showdown at Hotel Oblivion completely resets the timeline. Stripped of their powers, each must fend for themselves and find a new normal, with widely varying degrees of success. But the trappings of their eerie new world prove too many to ignore for long. Their father, Reginald, is alive and well, and has stepped out of the shadows and into public life, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire.
A mysterious group called the Keepers meet in secret, believing the reality they live in is a lie and that great retribution is coming. As these strange new forces conspire around them, umbrella school Now they must come together one last time to make things right, even at the risk of upsetting the fragile peace they’ve so hard secured.” New characters this season are played by Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and David Cross.
