Mass transfer particle finally discovered
Laguna Design/Science Photo Library
A strange particle that has mass when moving in one direction and loses mass when moving in another direction was first theorized more than a decade ago. These mass-transfer particles can now be glimpsed in metalloids exposed to extreme conditions.
“This (particle) is very strange. Imagine walking down the street in New York. If you go straight, you are very light and have no mass. But if you turn 90 degrees to the east or west, , it will be huge.”
