What liberals rebel against is seeing all of this lumped together and demonized. “I think it’s time for people to speak out,” Phillips says. “There’s this weird minoritarianism, this obsession with kids and genitals and drag queens and librarians, and all of that stuff that makes you think, ‘What is wrong with you guys?'”
It’s worth noting that the backlash has already begun: Last weekend, former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswami appeared on X and called the “They’re weird” claims “stupid and childish,” adding, “This is a presidential election, not a high school prom queen contest.”
Derek Guy, also known as X’s Menswear Guy, responded to a post that featured a photo of former candidate Ramaswami and a zoom in on his ill-fitting shoes with the caption, “huge shoes.” It was an attempt to call out Ramaswami’s own weirdness, but two days later Guy posted a new message to X saying, “The discussion about ‘weird’ doesn’t look good to me.”
Calling someone a “weird” implies that someone else is “normal” or abnormal, and that comes with consequences. “The reason transgender people get attacked is because women who don’t have children get attacked,” Phillips says. Trump and his supporters have no intention of looking back and reconsidering their actions, and ultimately “weirdness” may become “weaponized and insecure.” “Although I do think there’s a danger in not calling attention to weirdos,” she adds.
“The queer framing is very effective as a meme,” Phillips says, “but it’s not very effective as an outreach strategy.”
Katiyar says it all comes down to whether liberals, and Harris’s campaign in particular, can back up the memes with something else. “Younger voters are really concerned about social issues, housing prices, the economy, really substantive issues,” she says. “So unless you continue to change policies to create change, I think the (‘weird’) memes will lose their potency.” To use last week’s buzzword, that’s pretty cheeky.

Italian Olympic gymnast Giorgia Villa is a Parmesan influencer. This is perfect. No notes. Check out the photo of her posing with a giant wheel of cheese. (Yes, most of these threads will be about the Paris Olympics. Sorry, not sorry.)
Sure, you’ve heard of walking on water, but have you ever heard of standing above water? Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina did it, and this photo of him doing just that has gone incredibly viral.
Korean sniper Kim Ye-ji is cooler than you. Everyone thinks so.
Finally, I would like to say the following: A video of Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles and Jordan Childs dancing with Snoop Dogg.
