Gemini Live Subscribers can chat with the generative AI, allowing for more conversational interactions than traditional AI. Google Assistant But Gemini Live isn’t just designed to produce a more lifelike voice: The technology also understands context better than earlier digital assistants, allowing it to ask follow-up questions and even help the AI understand what’s on your phone screen, what’s in your Gmail, and what’s on your calendar.
In addition to enhanced conversations, Gemini Live is designed to be more agent-like, allowing the AI to actually perform tasks like creating playlists and drafting emails. Users can interrupt the AI, pause conversations and resume them later, and search chat transcripts.
Gemini Live has been available in English for Android devices since August 13th and requires a subscription to Gemini Advanced, which is part of the $20/month Google AI Premium option. 2 Ask questions about what you see on your screen or in photos (coming soon)
Gemini Live is a multimodal AI
One of the key differences between Gemini Live and previous digital assistants is its ability to understand context, including what’s displayed on the screen. This means, for example, you can start a conversation about the YouTube video you’re watching or the web page you’re reading. The live demo at the Made By Google event also included a demo of Live asking questions using photos.
Using multiple forms of input, such as both audio and images, is called multimodal, and this is another feature of Live that isn’t ready at launch but is expected to be released soon.

Extensions allow Gemini Live to perform actions within other apps
Another advantage Gemini Live has over previous Assistants is its ability to work with other apps, like summarizing Gmail conversations, checking your calendar, and creating playlists. You can also ask Gemini Live to start a draft of an email so you can make changes to it in the Mail app before sending it. This works through Live as well as typing commands into the Gemini app. These features are made possible through extensions like Keep, Tasks, and Utilities. These won’t be available at launch, but Google says these extensions and the skills that go with them are coming soon.

The conversational nature of Gemini Live likely allows for more back and forth to refine or clarify the tips the AI provides.
