As articulated in the various appendices to Tolkien’s Middle-earth works and in the Apocrypha, the war between the Elves and Sauron marks a key turning point in Sauron’s new plans for Arda. Having successfully infiltrated Eregion, the heart of the Elven kingdom in Middle-earth, Sauron disguised himself as Annatar, Lord of Gifts, and persuaded the lord of Eregion, the master smith Celebrimbor, to join him in his plan to forge the all-powerful sword. But Celebrimbor chose to save Middle-earth from total destruction and domination by the King of Mordor. While Annatar instructed and guided him in the making of the 16 rings (9 to be given to the mortal world and 7 to the Dwarven lords), Celebrimbor used the techniques he learned from Annatar to create 3 more rings for the Elves (Naria, Vilia, and Nenya), completely separate from Annatar’s knowledge and the evil magic that would allow him to control the Elves through the One Ring that he created himself in Mordor. Over 100 years of planning and influence fell apart when the Elves discovered Annatar’s true identity the moment he tried to use the One Ring… and Sauron, now revealed in his true identity, decided to take what he wanted from the Elves by force instead.
