Last year, WhatsApp finally added the option to share photos (and later videos) in HD quality. Unfortunately, the feature had one major limitation: you had to remember to select this option every time you uploaded a photo, otherwise it would be uploaded in standard SD resolution.
As spotted by Android Police, WhatsApp is now adding the option to choose high-definition quality by default for sharing images and videos.

Currently rolling out in the latest WhatsApp beta, the new feature should be visible under Storage & Data in the app’s Settings. Here, you can tap on Media upload quality and choose HD quality if you prefer.

‘Bring back the blue’: WhatsApp unveils app redesign, and not everyone is happy
If you select the HD quality option, WhatsApp warns you that photos and videos will send slower and may be six times larger (at a cost if you send media over a mobile data connection), but if you care about image quality, you’ll probably be able to accept these limitations.
Also, please note that this only applies to media uploads and not status updates.
This is still a beta option and it’s unclear when it will be officially released, but several people have reported seeing it in the beta, so it seems likely it will be officially available to everyone soon.
