WhatsApp has long been the largest messaging platform in the world, but it hasn’t received as much attention in the US, where other platforms like Messenger are the preferred DM platform.
until now.
Today, WhatsApp announced that it has reached a new milestone of 100 million U.S. users.
According to WhatsApp:
“It’s been a while since we’ve written about WhatsApp’s momentum, but today we have some exciting news to share: As of this month, WhatsApp has reached 100 million U.S. users. “This milestone is long overdue and proves that WhatsApp is the solution to the cross-platform divide in America. Whether they have an iPhone or an Android, people want private, secure messaging that’s easy for everyone to use, and that’s what we do best.”
To be clear, Messenger still has a much larger number of active users in the U.S., at nearly 200 million.
However, WhatsApp has recently become more popular as more people want more privacy and to prevent others from snooping on their private conversations.
Overall, this is becoming a bigger focus, as fewer people are posting updates on their social media profiles these days, instead opting to keep more exclusive and intimate messaging chats with friends.
With social media posts being self-perpetuating and comment sections rife with fears and debates, the novelty of sharing with everyone is fading, and for many people, staying with just friends is a better option, which, combined with growing concerns about data privacy, has led to a steady rise in users downloading WhatsApp.
As the most used global messaging app, WhatsApp is well suited for cross-border communication and continues to add new features and enhance its service.
This new milestone is evidence of that, and it’s interesting to consider the expanded messaging change and how it relates to marketing strategy.
While WhatsApp doesn’t allow you to run ads, you can drive conversations within the app through click-to-message ads, and create WhatsApp groups and communities to better connect with your audience.
This is something to consider, as the numbers show that your target users are more likely to be active within your app.
