Traditionally, summer is the season for sunburn and allergies, and winter is the season for runny noses and the flu, but now one pathogen appears to be upending our annual cycle of medical illness: the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
Infections also increased over the summer, and countries such as the UK, the US and France have recently seen increases in the number of cases and hospitalisations. England, for example, saw a weekly average of around 180 cases reported in early April rise to more than 500 by mid-July.
