I woke up this morning to a Christopher Nolan movie. Interstellar Perhaps fans of the film have now had a fitting journey and happy ending to their spacefaring adventure, as it will be returning to theaters in 70mm IMAX, a little later than originally planned.
Earlier in the day, a Christopher Nolan fan account tweeted a rumor that Paramount had destroyed all of the film’s 70mm IMAX prints, after postponing its September 26 re-release. News began to spread from there, and io9 reached out to Paramount for comment but did not receive a response.
Later that day, perhaps due to the rumors, Variety magazine broke the following news: Interstellar The re-release was scheduled for December 6th, not September 27th. The article quoted a “studio insider” as saying, “The 70mm print Interstellar Paramount claims to have kept more copies of the film than most other movies, but reels of film wear out while playing on the big screen, so it’s not uncommon for them to become unusable after their theatrical release.”
This is a long-winded way of implying that while some prints may have been destroyed, that’s normal, there are still plenty left, and the film will be re-released. The delay isn’t even due to those prints; it’s reportedly an effort to better align with upcoming home entertainment releases.
Basically, it’s just too much to think about a seemingly random movie, even if it’s celebrating its 10th anniversary in a few months.
Written and directed by Nolan Interstellar The film tells the story of a father (Matthew McConaughey) who journeys deep into space to save the world, leaving behind his children (one of whom is played by a young Timothée Chalamet) as they grow up (later played by Jessica Chastain and Casey Affleck). This is a unique and beautiful film, and if you can, plan to see it again in 70mm IMAX in December.
