Marvel Animation had a really fun panel at D23 this weekend, but the footage wasn’t made available online. What a shame. We’re all in the dark. Eye of Wakandaand Your Friendly Neighborhood Spiderman Go out into the world.
That didn’t happen. What happened was that we got a little glimpse of those shows and X-Men ’97 Season 2 featured a brief shot of Wolverine’s return, along with his and Grant Morrison’s Frank Quitely’s iconic suits. New X-Men-and What if…? Season 3 introduced a new team of Avengers, including Riri Williams, Moon Knight, and Sam Wilson, while other flying mech suits came together to form their own version of Voltron. Eye of WakandaDirector Ryan Coogler’s new animated series showcased its unique aesthetic, blending CGI animation with a hand-drawn feel. A short clip showed attendees showing a new character named Noni leaping across a giant pirate ship to retrieve a green-eyed mask guarding a purple stone.
They were all great, but the biggest highlight for us was… Friendly Neighborhood Spidermanand news Marvel Zombies The much-rumored anime revival has now been released, with footage of the show now being shown.
First Spidermanstyle Friendly Neighborhood It reminds me of 1950s cartoons in the best way. It starts with Peter Parker’s first day of school. As Aunt May gives him a ride, out of nowhere, a giant green portal opens in the sky. A giant symbiote creature falls out of it. It looks like Venom, but with a furry mane and horns, and it’s about to wreak havoc, but two magical rays engulf him. It’s Doctor Strange. Peter is surprised by the wizard who appeared out of nowhere, but the creature escapes. Peter throws a brick to distract it, and the creature tries to approach a classmate. “Hey, ugly,” the creature says, and Strange grabs it again. “Good job, kid,” he says. During this, a small spider is seen descending from the portal.
Strange pulls the creature through the portal, but as the portal closes the web breaks and the spider falls onto Peter’s shoulder. Peter goes over to the girl he helped and we see three sides of the spider – his face, her face and the spider crawling up his shirt. When she introduces herself, Peter screams. She gets annoyed, but Peter passes out. This leads into an awesome credits sequence, complete with all kinds of comic book panels and stylization, set to a very catchy rap song.
The story picks up a few months later, when some thugs with high-tech limbs are planning a heist. Spider-Man appears in a very homemade suit with tubes running from a tank in his waist to his wrists. He tries to stop them, but gets beaten up badly and hears a voice: Norman Osborn (voice of Colman Domingo), who says he’s been keeping an eye on him and can help. He gives him advice on how to stop the thugs, which works, and crisis is averted for now.
The panel ended with the news that Marvel is developing a four-part series. Marvel Zombies Future anime series that debut will be more violent than previous anime zombie Such materials What if…? It was rated TV-MA. zombie The video begins with a helicopter flying over a city, shooting zombies. On the ground, Shang-Chi and Katie are fighting a group of zombies in servant outfits (who sound like they’re played by Simu Liu and Awkwafina, or at least very similar voice actors). A man falls from the sky with a very bright ring on his arm. “Who’s that?” Katie asks. “It’s my father,” Shang-Chi says. Wen-Wu starts beating up the bad guys with the Ten Rings, killing one zombie the size of Godzilla. Stunned, Shang stops fighting and gets bitten on the arm. That’s the end… until Wen-Wu sends the ring to stop the infection from spreading. But in doing so, he injures himself and is killed by the zombies. “Remember what your mother taught you,” Wen-Wu says as he dies. With the rings in hand, Katie and Shang escape in a helicopter.
“Five years later” is a nice little Endgame Nod. The world is post-apocalyptic, and Shan and Katy are driving through the wasteland, covering Journey songs on “Zombie Apocalypse Radio.” They’re in a sports car with pink highlights. Shan has a ring on her right arm that protects her from a deadly infection. Mad Maxthey’re Jimmy Woo (voiced by Randall Park, I think), good similar pronunciation).
A bunch of bad guys (who appear to be zombies, but the lead rider is a Skrull) try to attack the group. When that doesn’t work, Shan and Katie fire their rings at them, taking them all down one by one. “We’re awesome,” Jimmy says.
It’s unclear when these clips will appear on Disney+, however, as Marvel has been just as keen to reveal the release dates for its upcoming animated shows as it has to reveal the clips above. Friendly Neighborhood and Eye of Wakanda The first thing we saw today is Marvel’s animation plans, and we’ll share more details as they become available.
