Key Takeaways
- The Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback e-tron offers more power and efficiency, making it an attractive choice.
- Although the changes to appearance and design are minimal, the performance gains are a big improvement.
- Practicality is a key feature of the Audi Q4, but the premium model comes with a hefty price tag.
I recently encountered the Audi Q8 e-tron and thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it was a bit too big for my needs. It’s a common problem; bulk is the norm when it comes to choosing among the best electric cars. Thankfully, the Q4 e-tron Sportback comes in a much more manageable package. In fact, as far as SUV design goes, I think it’s pretty much what I want from this type of EV.
We’ve reviewed previous versions of the Q4 e-tron and Q4 e-tron Sportback, and both were solid enough propositions. While there’s not much difference externally, Audi has made some subtle tweaks to the latest edition of the Q4 that make the EV even better than before. Much of the appeal comes from the increased power and improved efficiency, and the model you see here develops 335bhp from a twin-motor, fully automatic setup. So if you’re looking for sportiness without worrying about size, the Audi Q4 e-tron might be the car for you.

Pricing, Availability and Specifications
The Audi Q4 e-tron can be pricey, especially compared to something like the wildly popular Tesla Model Y. US pricing starts at $58,200 for the Sportback model, although the car I test drove came loaded with all the bells and whistles, bringing the street price to a steep £64,185 (about $83,000).
Design and Build
Business as usual
The latest model of the Q4 e-tron may not be dramatically different from the previous model, but Audi has made some small design tweaks. The LED headlights on my car look great, and even better, they were very visible after dark. I like the smoother look of the exterior. The front end is improved with trim embellishments. The rear effect is also solid, and the taillight bar works well.
Considering it’s a mid-size SUV, the overall look of the Audi Q4 is fairly conservative and I think it’s a lot more appealing because it’s less bulky like the Q8 e-tron. Space levels are still good and I especially like the trunk area. Opening the electric liftback reveals a flat load-access opening and plenty of space for just about anything. Admittedly, the Audi Q4 e-tron isn’t the most exciting thing we’ve seen this year, but it’s certainly practical.
Refreshing interior
Predictable but actionable
I don’t think the Q4 e-tron offers a dramatically different experience than the Q8, but that’s not really a criticism. Audi’s design team has stuck to its tried and tested interior formula, making the cockpit functional rather than exciting, while still being comfortable. This extends to the back seat, where there are plenty of storage options to keep passengers close at hand, and everyday essentials like power plugs are easily accessible.
Returning to the front, the glossy black plastic can be a bit reflective in strong sunlight, but the overall effect is impressive and we like the body-colour matched dashboard trim components, which look like they took a lot of effort. We’re not sure how many people will notice this stubble-like touch, but the commendable finish and keen eye for detail are what sets the German luxury brand apart from its competitors.
Technology Breakdown
There are plenty of things to enrich your trip
Audi’s infotainment system has been around for a while now and feels pretty much compatible no matter which model you drive. For me, that’s fine because it works well. You don’t have to waste time trawling through menus and sub-menus to understand them. The center of function and functionality is the slightly enlarged 11.6-inch central touchscreen, which is as crisp and clear as any Audi.

Owning an EV should be easy, but our attitudes towards gasoline cars make it more complicated
If we think about EVs differently than gasoline cars, they could be cheaper, easier to charge, and the general infrastructure could be much easier to use.
Battery, range and performance
It has a wider range and a stronger punch.
I was very impressed with the Q4 e-tron Sportback. It feels much more focused than the big, bulky Q8 e-tron, which is fun but a bit unwieldy in tight spaces. The Q4 is much more fun to drive and is definitely easier to handle. In fact, that extra power makes it a ton of fun and much easier to drive down tight roads without breaking out into a cold sweat when walls and hedges are dangerously close, as you would in the Q8 e-tron.
The Q4 is more fun to drive and arguably easier to handle.
Naturally, the Q4 e-tron Sportback also excels on the highway, with a smooth ride and a nearly silent drivetrain that makes for a very relaxing experience. This model has an official extended range of 323 miles, a figure that we found pretty accurate, and considering its design, this mid-size SUV is actually quite frugal when it comes to power consumption.
Naturally, performance dropped off as we started to play around with the drive modes, but overall, we think the Q4 e-tron Sportback makes long-distance driving less stressful. However, the Q4 e-tron is pretty powerful, as it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds. However, the top speed is a somewhat modest 112 mph. Acceleration proved powerful enough to surprise passengers. Maximum charging speed is also 175kW, which is enough for a quick pit stop on the road.
Should I buy the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback?
The Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback may not look like a new car, and its familiar appearance leaves anyone wondering about the appeal of this latest model. But the real charm comes when you get behind the wheel of this mid-size SUV. Once you get going, you’re in for a real surprise. Even better, it’s surprisingly comfortable, and the 20-inch wheels and reasonably high-profile tires help immeasurably in that regard. Anyone interested in owning the most powerful and efficient mid-size SUV ever should get behind the wheel now.
