Earlier this year, Disney teamed up with Epic Games in its latest foray into video games, announcing plans for a huge investment and major collaboration. Fortnite –The studio touted the news as a “new world” where fans will be able to interact with many of the worlds currently owned by Disney — and of course, there’ll be shopping, so naturally, that’s exactly where we’ll start.
The announcement was made last night during the Disney Horizons panel, which was also streamed live. Within The first of Disney’s next steps for the game, which includes the game itself and the latest live event package that lets players’ avatars have fun griddying in a fake stage hall, is primarily a way to continue evolving the myriad crossovers within Disney. FortniteDisney’s Josh D’Amaro was joined by Disney Animation’s Jennifer Lee, Pixar’s Pete Docter, Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni, and Marvel’s Kevin Feige to tease a series of new skin packs for the game due for release later this year.
Coming this fall are skins based on Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and Frozone. The Incredibles The trio of villains from the movies and Disney (Maleficent, Captain Hook, and Cruella de Vil) will also be in the game, but three new characters will be introduced next week. Star Wars Inspired by The Mandalorian‘s third season: skins for Moff Gideon and IG-11, plus moving backpack bling for Grogu in his bag.
But it was Marvel who made perhaps the biggest announcement. FortniteThe upcoming season of is entirely Marvel-themed. Titled “Absolute Doom,” it will premiere on August 16th, and its storyline will see Doctor Doom come to the game’s island and wreak havoc with the power of Pandora’s Box, wreaking havoc on the lives of many of Marvel’s biggest characters, including a cadre of friends and foes. Perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised that Disney’s efforts to invest $1.5 billion in equity in Epic are beginning rather cautiously — after all, the deal announced in February did mention “an entirely new gaming universe” that would supposedly exist at Epic.
